David West scored 38 points to spark New Orleans past San Antonio 101-79, pushing the reigning NBA champions to the brink of play-off elimination.
Shaking off a pinched nerve in his back, West had one of the greatest games of his life. His 14 rebounds, five blocked shots and five assists were all play-off career highs.
He led the Hornets to a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semi-final series and put the Spurs in jeopardy of falling short in their bid for a fifth NBA crown in 10 seasons.
Elsewhere, Richard Hamilton scored 31 points and the Detroit Pistons advanced to the Eastern Conference finals for the sixth year in a row by defeating Orlando 91-86.
The Pistons captured the series 4-1 and will next play either the Boston Celtics or Cleveland Cavaliers for a berth in the NBA Finals.
