It is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), his work on Sagrada Família is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica. On 19 March 1882, construction of the Sagrada Família began under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted the remainder of his life to the project, and he is buried in the church's crypt. At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.

【Yahoo新聞報道】天主教教宗方濟各近日宣布，正式承認西班牙加泰羅尼亞著名建築師高第（Antoni Gaudí）的「英豪德行（heroic virtues）」，賦予其「可敬者（The Venerable）」稱號，為高第晉身封聖之路邁出重要一步。

綜合外媒報道，教宗方濟各昨日（14 日）接見聖座封聖部部長塞梅拉羅（Marcello Semeraro）樞機，授權頒布法令，承認高第的英豪德行。高第是巴塞羅那著名地標聖家堂（Sagrada Familia）的設計者，被譽為「上帝的建築師」，此次獲封「可敬者」，標誌着教會正式認可他在信仰與道德生活上的卓越表現，為未來獲列真福和封聖鋪路。

高第於 1852 年出生於西班牙加泰羅尼亞的雷烏斯，自幼體弱多病，常獨自沉思自然萬物與造物主的奧妙。他於 1882 年起全心投入聖家堂的設計與建造工作，並將之視為天主交付的使命，畢生致力於結合藝術與信仰，希望藉此作品帶領人們親近天主。聖家堂自 1882 年動工以來至今仍未完工，預計在 2026 年，即高第逝世 100 周年完成。

高第於 1926 年 6 月 7 日在前往教堂途中遭電車撞倒，最終傷重不治，終年 73 歲，葬禮吸引約 3 萬人參加。教會指出，他生前虔誠信仰、勤領聖事，並認為藝術創作是讚美上主的方式，其一生展現出非凡的宗教熱誠與藝術天賦。

除了高第，教宗方濟各同時也宣布，承認了其他多位人士的英勇聖德及真福資格，包括印度修女伊萊沙（Eliswa della Beata Vergine）和在巴西殉道的意大利神父蘭喬蒂（Nazareno Lanciotti）。如需晉升為真福，高第的個案仍須獲教會確認一項與他有關的神蹟，方能進入下一階段的封聖程序。
