(Frankie Chan)
我們應何時用 compare with 和 compare to?「讚美」的英交是 compliment 還是 complement? 還是usage(英語運用)的問題?
All right/ Alright
The presentation was all right(形容詞).
Did you get home all right (副詞)last night?
Could you check this email I’ve written and see if it’s alright?
Among/ Amid / Amidst
I saw some familiar faces among the crowd.
The CEO cancelled her visit amid speculation that her health was failing.
Between/ Among / Amongst
On the plane I was sitting between two large men.
There’s a lot of fighting among the crew.
Compliment/ Complement
My compliment to the chef,即是「代我向廚師致意」。
I must compliment you on your handling of a very challenging situation.
The new colleagues complement each other perfectly.
Its/ It’s
Its是it的「擁有格」(possessive form),即「它/牠的」,而it’s則是it is 的簡略形式(contraction),用於口語,正規的商用文件我們一般會避免使用。
例句:
The company increased its profits.
“Why did the CEO resign?” “It’s a long story.”
Compare with/ Compare to
順帶一提,does not compare with即是兩件事情比不上,不能相比。
例句:
If you compare some recent work with your older stuff, you’ll see how much you’ve improved.
Still only 21, she has been compared to the greatest entrepreneurs of all time.
Instant coffee just does not compare with freshly ground coffee.
Every day/ every day
Everyday與every day同樣有「每天」的意思,但everyday是形容詞,之後要跟名詞,例如everyday routine(每天的例行公事),而every day則指「天天」,兩者的用法不一,但不少香港人都錯把every day寫成everyday。
例句:
This is my everyday schedule.
We have a briefing session every day.
